AuroraFinder alerts you when one of our cameras in Iceland actually sees the northern lights, and sends you the photograph it just took. If something is not working, or you need an access code, start here.
You can always write to contact@aurorafinder.is. We normally reply within one working day.
01Getting an access code
AuroraFinder is in early access. The camera network is still growing and we are testing the service with partners in Iceland, so access is by invitation. There are two ways to get a code:
- From your hotel or tour operator. Partner accommodation and tour operators in Iceland give codes to their guests while the service is being tested. Ask at reception, or ask your guide.
- Ask us directly. We have a limited number of codes for early-access users. Write to contact@aurorafinder.is and tell us roughly where in Iceland you will be staying, and when. We will reply, and send you a code if we can.
Enter the code on the Enter your code screen the first time you open the app. You only do this once.
02My code will not work
Codes can expire or reach their usage limit, and the app tells you which has happened. Email us the code and we will issue a new one.
03I am not getting alerts
Check these, in order:
- Notifications are allowed for AuroraFinder in your device settings.
- Push notifications is switched on in the app under Settings, and the app is not muted.
- Notify me from is not set too high. Detections weaker than the level you chose stay silent on purpose.
- Your pin is within about 25 km of a camera. The Map tab shows which cameras cover you and the area each one reaches.
- The aurora has to be visible to a camera. A quiet night produces no alerts, which is the app working correctly.
All our cameras are in Iceland, so alerts pause by themselves when you leave the country and resume when you return. There is nothing to switch off or remember.
04The alerts wake me too often
Raise Notify me from in Settings so only stronger detections reach you, or mute the app for tonight, or for one, three or seven days. Alerts also pause automatically for a period after each one, so a single active night cannot flood your phone.
05Deleting your data
Settings → Forget me removes this device's registration from our systems immediately. The privacy policy sets out what is kept, and for how long.
06Reporting a problem
Email support@aurorafinder.is with your device model, the app version, and roughly when the problem happened. You will find the version in the app under Settings → App info. The same address is under Settings → Help and privacy.
